Richard Mille RM 52-05 Tourbillon Pharrell Williams
The talented, award-winning singer, songwriter and producer has long been a close friend of the brand and owns many of its iconic timepieces. When Richard Mille suggested they collaborate on the first high quality copy watches to bear his name, Pharrell looked deeply back into his childhood for inspiration. "I've always been fascinated by looking up at the sky. What's more inspiring than everything that has been and will be? Space, right in front of you. It's what you can see. It predates the Earth, predates the solar system. It will be in our Coming up behind me, there's nothing more meaningful than that. When I look up at the sky, I'm looking up at God. I feel like I'm part of many different parts of a whole. That's the alpha and the omega."
The word Pharrell uses to describe his music is "subversive." His art world is all about shifting focus and finding new perspectives in unexpected partnerships. "If it's not disruptive, it's simple. We need something to 'pop' in the world." As humans, we spend our time observing the universe. The “pop” of the RM 52-05 comes from our perspective changing completely 180 degrees.
The RM 52-05 rises to this artistic and technical challenge with what brand enthusiasts have come to expect from Richard Mille's creative development team. Using state-of-the-art technology, high-tech materials are treated in miniature through the collaboration of engravers, enamellers and painters. The technical innovation of the RM 52-05 tourbillon movement is mind-bending. The astronaut's helmet is sculpted from grade 5 titanium and hand-painted with indestructible paint, suggesting an all-pervading timelessness. As for the red planet itself, only red gold can display its unique color. We are drawn to the dramatic Valles Marineris, named after the Mariner 9 probe, humanity’s first envoy to our distant neighbor. The carving captures the overwhelming rock face, a daunting 7km above sea level, rising above the tawny sand below. Unlike traditional Grand Feu enamels, which are obtained by adding different pigments, the orange to red and blue to black gradients are achieved by stacking layers and increasing the number of firings at 850 degrees Celsius. The two white gold elements in the helmet contain a black sapphire and two diamonds, recalling the floodlights that illuminate our surroundings. Brown cermet combines the lightness of titanium with the hardness of ceramic. It consists of a metallic zirconium matrix and high-performance ceramics, giving the material an incredible brown hue and metallic reflection.
